Help us name our pet frog

In Room 2 we have a new pet frog. We don't know what to name our frog. Can you help us please? We have created a mini survey using a Google Form. You can vote for your favourite name by clicking the link. Votes close this Friday.

New Zealand School Time Lapse P2

The NZ School Time Lapse P2 is now live! Congratulations to the children in Room 2 who learnt how to use iMotion this week and created a time lapse of their mad science experiments. All your hard work has paid off. The time lapse is awesome! A big thank you to Mr Baker and the @Palmykids for editing the clips and adding the music.

#Kidsedchatnz Twitter Chat

This afternoon Hanna, Lakeysha and Stella spent some of the afternoon tweeting on #Kidsedchatnz. We love tweeting!!

Here were the questions:

What homework would you like to do?
How important to you think homework is and why?

We shared that we don't have a big focus on homework at Morningside School.  We did think that the Palmy Kids' 'Hands on Homework' was a cool idea. We might talk to them more about this and give it a go.

Flowers in Food Colouring Timelapse

Today Stella and I did an experiment with flowers. First we had five jars and we filled them up with water. Then we took the lid off the food colouring and put the same amount in each jar. After that we put the lid on the food colouring bottles. We had five white flowers. We put one flower in each jar. It takes time, but when it is finished it looks amazing. The flowers suck the water up the stalk and the colours come up to the petals. The petals go from white to a different colour.

Mad Science NZ School Time Lapse

This morning we created our first Time Lapse. We are participating in the NZ School Time Lapse Project. The theme is Mad Science. We decided that we would do the milk and food colouring experiment. This afternoon we're going to find out why the dish washing liquid reacted to the milk and food colouring.

We used iMotion on Miss Gentil's iPhone to make the Time Lapse. We set the iMotion app so that it took a photo every 3 seconds. Once we had finished our experiment iMotion put all the photos together to make a movie. Seven schools are participating in the NZ School Time Lapse Project. Mr Baker is going to edit all of our movies and put them together as one YouTube clip. Mr Baker teaches our blog buddy class in Palmerston North. We can't wait to see what mad science the other classes get up to.

Goodbye Leighton!!

Yesterday Room 2 had to say goodbye to Leighton. Leighton is moving to his new home in Hamilton this weekend. Room 2 was very sad to say goodbye. We will really miss you Leighton. All the very best for your new adventure in Hamilton.

From Room 2

P.S We think your turtle art looks awesome!

Character Day and our Pizza Party

Yesterday lots of children and teachers came dressed up as their favourite book characters for Character Day. Character Day was to celebrate the end of library week. We've had a special guest reader in the library at morning tea time each day. There have also been different library activities and every afternoon a different teacher has read to us in our classroom.

It was awesome to see so many children dressed up! After doing the morning roll we all lined up outside our classrooms for the character parade. The whole school joined in. There were lots of creative costumes. At the end of the parade we all did jump jam together.

After morning tea we all helped make pizzas for our class pizza party! We have been working very hard to fill up our class sparkler jar. We had to earn 200 sparklers before we got to plan our whole class reward. Last term we designed pizzas for our Fun Friday Maths. We all voted for our favourite pizza. Jacob, Joel and William's pizza was the most popular. They named their pizza Cronulla Shark. Because they won the pizza design competition last term we decided that it would awesome if they could actually make their pizza. Cronulla Shark has BBQ Sauce, ham, pineapple, capsicum, tomato and cheese on it. We also made a hawaiian pizza and another pizza that was a bit like a supreme pizza.

Everyone in Room 2 helped to create the pizzas. Then we baked them in the oven for 10 minutes (our oven was a little bit slow). Snail and Whale helped to take the pizzas over to the staff room too. The pizzas were ready right on lunch time. They were delicious!

Adventure Learning Projects

Every Friday we do Adventure Learning. Adventure Learning is based on Google's 20% Time. Google 20% Time is when Google employees are given 20% of their working week to work on projects that they're passionate about. Lots of teachers are now using this concept in their classrooms.

Last term we spent a lot of time working through weekly group challenges e.g. making nachos, designing a hut and planting seeds. This term Room 2 have started working on projects that they're passionate about. They've just finished their plans and are now getting stuck into learning about their chosen topic.

Here are some of the things that Room 2 children are learning about:

  • A new jump jam dance to teach the juniors.
  • Grizzly bears and polar bears. This group are learning about both types of bears and then are comparing how they are similar and different from each other.
  • Golden Bell frogs. Once they've learnt about what Golden Bell frogs eat and need in their habitat they've going to design a new frog habitat for Lucky.
  • How to make ice cream from scratch. They're also learning about the Tip Top factory. Miss King knows the manager of the Tip Top factory so the ice cream group emailed him this week to find out some of the answers to their questions.
  • Guinea pigs. This group is learning all about guinea pigs and how to care for them. Then they're going to look after Miss Gentil's guinea pigs for a whole day!
  • Art and crafts. These girls have been using Pinterest to help them with their initial idea. Then they've modified the design and have started drawing up their own plans.
  • Fairy gardens. The girls have found out what a fairy garden is, what materials they might need and are now planning their own fairy garden.

I'm so proud of how far you have all come and how hard you are working Room 2. Keep up the awesome work.

Aria and Suga-Rae reading about how to care for guinea pigs and taking notes. I'm sure you girls are going to do an awesome job of looking after Peanut and Raisin.

Stella, Carlia and Lakeysha using Pinterest to find craft ideas.

The boys learning about Golden Bell frogs and what they need in their habitat.

Bianca using Pinterest on the interactive whiteboard to find some more ideas for their own fairy garden design.

Tumai surrounded by books about frogs. He's also using Scribble Press on the iPad to start putting together some ideas for his frog book.

Haylee, Hanna and Michaela practising their dance moves in Room 9. Look at that awesome timing!!

Shannon checking out the Tip Top factory website to find out what flavours of ice cream they make. The ice cream group wondered what the first flavour of ice cream Tip Top created was. Maybe the manager will be able to answer this when he emails back.

Joel, Luke, Jacob and Leighton working on their 'I wonder...' questions. Their next step is to find out the answers for both grizzly and polar bears, then compare the answers.

Tori emailing the manager of the Tip Top factory in Auckland with some questions and a bit about what they're trying to achieve in Adventure Learning.

Sea Turtle Art

Over the past week Miss King has been doing some awesome sea turtle art with us. We've been learning about how to care for turtles in NZ for our inquiry unit, so the turtle art linked in really well. First we had to draw our outline with chalk. Once we had our outline we coloured the sections of our turtle in with bright coloured crayons. Then we used a black wash of dye to cover our turtle. We learnt that the dye wouldn't stick to the crayon, but that it would turn the chalk black. This week we are going to create our background and then Miss King will mount our art onto black paper for us. We will upload a slideshow of all the art work once we have completed it.

Twitter Club

Every second Thursday afternoon Room 2's Twitter Club join in on #kidsedchatnz on Twitter. The Twitter Club is a group of children that are interested in learning how to tweet on Twitter. Anyone can participate in this group on a Thursday afternoon. #Kidsedchatnz is when other NZ classrooms all tweet on Twitter from 2.00 pm - 2.30 pm with each other. Each time there are different focus questions that we tweet about. Last week the questions were about why reading is an important skill to learn and how we can become better readers. #Kidsedchatnz is organised by a NZ teacher for NZ children.

Room 2 children did an excellent job of tweeting with other schools last week. Children who are confident with using Twitter are learning to tweet independently using the iPads. The rest of the group tweets with Miss Gentil on the mat. We use the interactive whiteboard so that everyone can see the Twitter feed and take turns at tweeting. #Kidsedchatnz is a great way to teach positive Digital Citizenship.

Snail and Whale arrive at Morningside School

Since the start of the term Room 2 has been emailing and blogging with Room 5 from Russell Street School in Palmerston North. Room 5 has class mascots too. Their class mascots are a snail and a whale. This week we packaged Tatty Teddy and Nutmeg up and sent them to Palmerston North. Room 5 sent us Snail and Whale. We're going to take photos and blog about our Adventures with Snail and Whale over the next week so watch this space!

Room 2 were very excited to receive Snail and Whale on Thursday afternoon. We all sat down in our campfire space while Joel and Stella cut open the envelope. We really enjoyed listening to the story about Snail and Whale. We also discovered that we have the book in our school library too. Some of the children in Room 2 showed Snail and Whale around our school. Snail and Whale even managed to climb up to the top of the rugby goal post, but then Whale got stuck! Luckily Snail saved him. Room 2 also showed Snail and Whale around the other classrooms, vegetable gardens and the playground. Snail and Whale  met our frog, Lucky. I think Lucky was a little bit shy though as he hid underneath his plant. On Thursday afternoon we tweeted about the Snail and Whale book on #kidsedchatnz. We thought it was awesome that our buddy class was tweeting too.

We also found out where Palmerston North is on our NZ map.
